Trypetesa lampas is a specialized marine crustacean belonging to the order Cirripedia and the family Trypetesidae. Unlike common agricultural pests that damage plant tissues, this organism is a notorious shell-boring pest that primarily targets the shells of living gastropod mollusks, creating complex internal cavities through bioerosion.

The biology of Trypetesa lampas is strictly tied to its host-seeking behavior. The female is the primary agent of damage; it bores into the calcified shell, creating deep, branched tunnels. These tunnels serve as protected galleries where the organism resides, protected from predation while maintaining a connection to the external water column for filter feeding.

The life cycle involves larval stages that drift in the water column as part of the plankton. Once a suitable host is detected, the larvae attach to the surface and undergo a transformation process. They then utilize a combination of mechanical action and chemical secretions to penetrate the hard calcium carbonate matrix of the host shell, often remaining in the same host for its entire adult life.

The impact of this pest is primarily detrimental to the health and structural integrity of the mollusk shell. The presence of numerous boreholes weakens the shell, making the mollusk susceptible to pathogens, increased metabolic stress, and predation. In aquaculture, severe infestations can significantly reduce the marketability and survival rates of cultivated shell-bearing organisms.

Managing Trypetesa lampas is challenging due to its endolithic (inside-the-shell) lifestyle. Strategies include:

• Regular screening of populations for characteristic boreholes on the exterior of shells.
• Quarantine procedures for any newly introduced stocks to prevent the spread of larvae.
