Fieldfare

The Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) is a member of the thrush family (Turdidae) that is recognized in agronomy as a pest for orchards and berry plantations. Unlike insects, this avian pest consumes soft fruits and berries, often leading to total loss of commercial harvests in fruit-growing regions during peak maturity stages.

Taxonomically, the fieldfare belongs to the order Passeriformes. These birds are highly gregarious, living and feeding in large flocks. This social structure allows them to exploit food sources efficiently, turning garden plots into target sites for mass foraging, especially when natural woodland food sources are depleted or during the breeding season.

The crops most vulnerable to fieldfare damage include cherries, sweet cherries, blueberries, raspberries, currants, and strawberries. They also pose a significant threat to apple and pear orchards, where they peck at the skin of ripening fruits, creating entry points for fungal pathogens and decay organisms which ruin the potential shelf life of the produce.

The biology and lifecycle of the fieldfare involve seasonal migration and high reproductive rates. During the summer, a single pair can produce two broods. As the young birds mature, they join the larger flock, leading to increased pressure on fruit plantations. Their feeding behavior is opportunistic, meaning they focus on the most accessible sugar-rich fruits available in the environment.

The economic impact of fieldfares is substantial due to their rapid consumption and destructive feeding habits. Besides the direct loss of fruit weight, their presence causes sanitary issues in the orchard due to droppings, which contaminate foliage and fruit surfaces. This degradation makes the harvest unusable for market distribution.

• Deploying bio-acoustic systems that emit alarm calls to scare the birds away.
