Systematic position: The Mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Turdidae. As the largest thrush species in Europe, it is recognized in agricultural sectors as a significant pest capable of causing substantial damage to fruit-bearing plants.
Crops affected: This bird species targets a variety of pome and stone fruits. Their primary food sources include cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants, grapes, and apples. Orchards and berry plantations are particularly vulnerable during the fruit ripening phase when birds flock to feed on the sugary crops.
Biology and life cycle: Mistle thrushes are known for their territorial behavior and adaptability. They typically nest in wooded areas but frequently invade agricultural lands and gardens to forage. With the ability to produce multiple broods per season, their population pressure on crops can increase significantly by the peak of the harvest season.
Nature of damage and pest status: The damage caused by mistle thrushes involves pecked fruits and partially consumed berries, which leads to tissue damage and rapid degradation. Once the skin of a fruit is punctured, it becomes prone to secondary fungal infections and rot, rendering the harvest unmarketable and susceptible to spoilage.
