Description
The tomato leafminer (scientific name: Tuta absoluta) is a devastating pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Gelechiidae. Originally from South America, it has spread globally, becoming a significant threat to solanaceous crops, capable of causing yield losses of up to 100% if left unmanaged.
While tomatoes are the primary host, the moth also infests potatoes, eggplants, and various wild solanaceous plants. The larvae are the main destructive stage, as they mine leaves, stems, and fruits, creating galleries that severely compromise the plant's structural integrity and aesthetic value.
The lifecycle of Tuta absoluta consists of egg, larva (four instars), pupa, and adult stages. Under favorable greenhouse conditions, the pest completes its development cycle in approximately 24 to 38 days. With multiple overlapping generations per year, the population can increase exponentially, making control efforts challenging.
Damage is characterized by irregular blotch mines on leaves, which eventually turn necrotic and dry out. When the larvae feed on fruits, they create entry points for secondary infections such as fungi and bacteria, leading to rot and rendering the produce unsalable in both domestic and export markets.
Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include the use of pheromone traps for early warning, the introduction of biological control agents like Nesidiocoris tenuis, and the application of selective insecticides. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, greenhouse hygiene, and the immediate destruction of infested plant debris are critical for population suppression.
