They represent a significant challenge for farmers in regions where their populations overlap with grain and pulse production.

Prairie chickens primarily cause damage to cereals such as corn, wheat, and sorghum. Their feeding behavior includes digging up seeds immediately after sowing and grazing on young sprouts. During the maturation stage, they can strip entire ears or heads of grain, causing substantial loss of yield. The impact is usually most pronounced on the edges of fields bordering natural grasslands or shrublands.

During the breeding season, they require specific habitats, but their search for supplemental food sources frequently leads them into cultivated fields, especially during harsh winters or drought conditions when natural food is scarce.

The damage patterns are visible as scattered bare spots in the field where seeds have been uprooted, or as thinned crop stands where seedlings have been clipped. Frequent feeding activity not only reduces the density of the crop but also causes compaction of the soil due to the birds' scratching behavior. This damage is most critical during the first few weeks of plant growth, which can impact the uniformity of the harvest.

Protection strategies focus on non-lethal deterrence to manage bird pressure. Farmers commonly use propane cannons, strobe lights, and laser systems to scare away flocks from fields. In high-risk areas, seed treatments with taste-aversion agents are employed to reduce the palatability of the seeds. Additionally, maintaining diversified habitats and avoiding the establishment of crops directly adjacent to known mating grounds can help mitigate losses.
