The hairy fungus beetle (Typhaea stercorea) is a member of the Mycetophagidae family. It is a cosmopolitan pest frequently found in warehouses, mills, and grain storage facilities. As the common name implies, this beetle thrives in environments where dampness allows for the growth of mold and fungi, which constitute its primary food source during the larval and adult stages.

This pest affects a wide array of stored products, including various cereals, oilseeds, flour, spices, and processed animal feeds. The beetle is specifically attracted to commodities that have begun to deteriorate due to high moisture levels. While they primarily feed on mold, they often inadvertently consume and damage the grains themselves, especially when the grain is moist and the embryo is vulnerable.

The life cycle of the hairy fungus beetle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with optimal reproduction occurring in humid environments with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 30°C. In favorable warehouse conditions, they can complete their life cycle relatively quickly, leading to rapid population growth.

The damage caused by these beetles is significant in terms of quality reduction. Their presence contaminates grain with dead adults, larvae, and cast skins, which can lead to the rejection of batches for human consumption. Furthermore, the beetles act as vectors for fungal spores, which can accelerate the spoilage of stored grain and promote the production of mycotoxins, representing a health risk.

Management strategies for this pest are centered on environmental control rather than direct chemical application:

  • Maintain stored grain moisture content below 13-14% to prevent mold growth.
  • Improve facility hygiene by removing grain debris and dust before storing new batches.
  • Ensure proper airflow and ventilation in silos to prevent moisture hotspots.
