The hairy fungus beetle (Typhaea stercorea) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Mycetophagidae. It is a small insect that primarily inhabits storage facilities where agricultural commodities are stored under humid conditions. The beetle, typically measuring between 2 and 3 mm in length, is easily recognized by its characteristic body, which is covered with dense, fine hairs.
This pest infests a wide range of stored products, including cereal grains, oilseeds, legumes, and various animal feeds. The beetle's biology is intrinsically linked to the presence of mold. As a mycophagous insect, it feeds on the spores and mycelium of various fungi that colonize grain when moisture levels exceed safety thresholds. Therefore, its presence is a diagnostic indicator of storage problems rather than a primary infestation of healthy grain.
The life cycle of Typhaea stercorea progresses through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Development is highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels within the stored mass. In favorable conditions, such as high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures, the life cycle is completed rapidly. This allows populations to explode in poorly managed grain piles, leading to significant contamination of the commodity.

By feeding on moldy grains, the beetles contaminate the stored goods with frass and larval skins, severely reducing product quality and market value. Although they rarely attack dry, clean grain, their ability to spread mold spores contributes to the rapid degradation and heating of the entire grain mass.
