Sweet potato leaf beetle

Typophorus versutus, commonly referred to as the sweet potato leaf beetle, is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, this beetle is recognized for its specialized feeding habits that target specific tuberous crops, significantly impacting harvest quality and yield.

The primary host plant for this species is the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). The insect demonstrates a preference for various parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and underground tubers. Because of this adaptability, the pest can sustain its population across various phenological stages of the host crop throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle of Typophorus versutus involves egg-laying in the soil or on the plant surface, followed by a subterranean larval phase. Larvae are the most damaging stage, as they burrow into the root systems and tubers to feed. The metamorphosis occurs within the soil, and the emerging adults continue to feed on the foliage, completing the pest’s lifecycle.

Damage caused by this beetle is twofold. Adults create irregular holes in the leaves, which reduces the photosynthetic area of the plant. The larvae are more destructive, creating tunnels and cavities inside the tubers. These injuries not only reduce the marketable weight of the crop but also provide entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, leading to rot.

Effective management of this pest requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. Key measures to reduce populations include:

• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the beetle in the soil.
• Eliminating wild host plants, particularly those in the Convolvulaceae family, near field borders.
• Using soil-applied insecticides during planting to protect the developing root systems.
• Monitoring pest density using sticky traps and visual inspection of foliage during the peak activity period.
