Description

The Cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae) is a species of moth belonging to the Erebidae family. It is easily recognizable by its vivid red and black forewings. While often admired for its striking appearance, it can act as a pest in certain agricultural or garden settings, particularly where its host plants are present.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the Senecio genus, commonly known as ragworts. The larvae (caterpillars) are specialist feeders, and their biology is tightly coupled with the phenology of these plants. They sequester alkaloids from the plants, making them toxic to many potential predators.

The life cycle consists of a single generation per year. Adult moths are diurnal and typically emerge in late spring or early summer. Females lay batches of eggs on the undersides of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through five instars, consuming large amounts of foliage before pupating in the soil where they overwinter.

Damage is primarily caused by the larvae during their feeding stage. They are gregarious at first and can strip entire plants of their leaves, leading to stunted growth or total defoliation. In areas where these plants are considered agricultural weeds, the moth is sometimes used for biological control, but in nursery or floral settings, it is treated as a pest.

  • Manual removal of larvae in small-scale garden environments.
  • Application of bio-rational insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which target larvae without harming beneficial insects.
  • Cultural practices like weed management to reduce the overall availability of host plants in the immediate vicinity of sensitive crops.
