Description

The fiddler crab (genus Uca) belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Ocypodidae. While these organisms are vital components of mangrove ecosystems and estuaries, in certain regions of Southeast Asia, they are identified as pests of agricultural crops cultivated in flooded lands, particularly rice.

The primary targets for damage are rice crops situated in tidal zones and river deltas. Crabs actively colonize irrigation canal systems and the fields themselves, utilizing the soil of waterlogged paddies as a substrate for digging complex networks of burrows, which leads to soil instability.

The biology of these crustaceans is closely linked to tidal cycles. Fiddler crabs are burrow-dwellers that primarily feed on detritus and microorganisms; however, in search of food and to expand their shelters, they frequently cut the roots and stems of young rice seedlings. Their life cycle includes a larval stage that develops in seawater, after which the juveniles migrate to the coastal zone.

The detrimental impact of these crabs involves not only the direct consumption of plant material but also the large-scale destruction of hydrotechnical infrastructure. Their burrowing activity compromises the integrity of levees and dikes, resulting in uncontrolled water leakage from rice paddies, nutrient leaching, and premature soil desiccation, which is detrimental to rice development.

Protection measures include reinforcing the banks and dikes with modern geotextile materials to prevent burrowing damage. Additionally, biological control methods are employed to attract natural predators, and in extreme cases, barrier protection using fine-mesh netting is installed to prevent the migration of adult crabs into cultivated plots.
