Commonly known as the Atlantic sand fiddler crab, this species is a prominent resident of estuarine and intertidal zones, characterized by its ability to construct extensive burrow networks in sandy or muddy substrates.

While not a typical agricultural pest, Uca pugilator can cause significant damage to coastal vegetation, particularly in mangrove reforestation projects or nurseries located in tidal zones. Their burrowing activity can disturb the soil structure around the base of young plants, leading to root exposure and environmental stress.

The biology of the species revolves around the tidal cycle, with individuals emerging to feed on organic matter during low tide. The reproductive cycle involves a planktonic larval stage that returns to the shore after development. Their high density in certain areas can lead to significant soil turnover, which indirectly affects the stability of the plant root systems in the immediate vicinity.

The primary form of damage is physical. By excavating complex tunnels, these crabs undermine the anchorage of seedlings and young plants. In areas with high population densities, the cumulative effect of these burrows can cause substantial soil erosion around the roots, potentially stunting growth or causing plant mortality due to desiccation or root damage.

Control measures emphasize physical exclusion rather than chemical eradication to preserve the delicate estuarine ecosystem. Effective strategies include:
