The lesser mealworm (Uloma culinaris) is a significant storage pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae. These beetles are commonly found in grain storage facilities, flour mills, and food processing plants, where they thrive in environments with poor sanitation or improper storage conditions.
This pest affects a wide variety of commodities, including flour, various types of cereals, bran, grain, and dried plant-based food products. The larvae are particularly destructive, as they consume the grain kernels and flour, causing significant weight loss and nutrient degradation in stored supplies.
The biology and lifecycle of the lesser mealworm are heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity. The female lays eggs directly into the food material, and the larval stage is where most of the damage occurs. Furthermore, the metabolic heat and moisture produced by a large infestation can promote mold growth, leading to additional spoilage of the affected grain lots.

This includes meticulous cleaning of all storage equipment and areas to remove food residues, maintaining low humidity in the grain, and regular inspection of the products. In cases of severe infestations, professional fumigation or the use of approved insecticides is necessary to eliminate the population and protect subsequent batches of products.
