The broad-horned flour beetle (Ulomoides) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of stored grain products and processed foods globally, thriving particularly well in environments where sanitation practices are not strictly maintained.

This insect primarily infests flour, cereals, bran, animal feed, and various dry agricultural commodities. It is a common problem in flour mills, bakeries, and granaries, where it hides in the structural cracks of storage facilities, making eradication difficult once an infestation has established itself within the equipment.

The biological development of Ulomoides is temperature-dependent. The life cycle begins with eggs laid inside the food source, progressing through several larval instars, a pupal stage, and finally adulthood. The beetles are known for their resilience and ability to endure various storage conditions, quickly adapting to high-density populations within containers.

Infestation symptoms include the presence of frass, larvae, and cast skins within the product, causing a distinct musty odor and a significant loss in nutritional value. Beyond direct consumption of the product, these beetles contribute to the heating of grain piles, which promotes the growth of fungi and further reduces the commercial value of the stocks.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle, emphasizing preventative measures and precise intervention:

• Rigorous sanitation to remove all food residues from warehouses and processing equipment.
• Monitoring pest activity with traps to detect early infestations.
• Managing environmental factors, such as grain aeration and cooling, to limit insect reproduction.
• Application of approved insecticides or fumigants in empty storage facilities to prevent cross-contamination.
