Broad-horned flour beetle

The broad-horned flour beetle (Ulomoides dermestoides) is a significant stored-product pest belonging to the Tenebrionidae family within the Coleoptera order. While originally a tropical species, this beetle has successfully colonized storage facilities worldwide through the international grain trade, becoming a major challenge for food security and industrial grain management.

This pest is highly polyphagous and infests a vast range of products. It primarily targets cereals, including wheat, corn, and rice, as well as processed goods such as flour, bran, pasta, and dried fruits. In manufacturing facilities, it can infest equipment, making it difficult to eradicate without a comprehensive sanitation program.

The biology of the species is characterized by high reproductive rates in warm conditions. The developmental cycle—egg, larva, pupa, and adult—is highly dependent on temperature and moisture. Adults are flightless but crawl effectively, allowing them to migrate between grain batches. Under ideal temperatures (above 25°C), the entire lifecycle completes rapidly, allowing for rapid population explosions within infested silos.

The damage caused by the broad-horned flour beetle is twofold: direct feeding and contamination. Both larvae and adults consume the protein and starch content of the grain. Furthermore, their waste, including feces and cast skins, leads to significant contamination, rendering the food product unmarketable, triggering mold growth, and reducing the nutritional value of stored stocks.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management approach. Recommended control measures include:

• Maintaining low temperature and low moisture levels within grain silos.
• Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal of debris and residual flour from equipment.
• Using pheromone traps for monitoring beetle population density.
• Applying chemical fumigation treatments for large-scale infestations in accordance with safety standards.
