Description

Systematic position: The driedfruit beetle (Urophorus humeralis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae. It is a cosmopolitan pest commonly found in orchards and areas where fruits and vegetable crops are stored or ripening in the field.

Host crops: This pest attacks a wide variety of fruit crops. It is particularly damaging to stone fruits such as peaches, apricots, and plums, as well as pome fruits like apples and pears. Furthermore, it causes severe economic losses in strawberry patches, vineyards, fig trees, and damaged tomato crops, preferring fruit with high sugar content and compromised skin.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles typically overwinter in soil, debris, or sheltered bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to infest fruit. Females deposit eggs directly into or near ripening fruit. The larvae emerge and burrow deep into the fruit flesh to feed, completing their development rapidly. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season under favorable conditions.

Damage and pest status: The larvae and adults create cavities inside the fruit, causing rapid breakdown of the tissue. Beyond direct consumption, their presence accelerates decay due to the introduction of yeasts, fungi, and bacteria. In many cases, these beetles are attracted to fruit already damaged by other insects or birds, turning bruised fruit into unusable, rotting material.

Management strategies: Successful control of the driedfruit beetle relies on strict sanitation and integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

  • Prompt removal and disposal of fallen or overripe fruit to eliminate larval breeding grounds.
  • Managing primary pests that pierce fruit skins, thereby preventing the entry points for the beetles.
  • Deploying food-based attractant traps to monitor populations and reduce the number of adults in the orchard.
  • Maintaining proper orchard hygiene by removing old fruit and maintaining clean ground cover to disrupt the overwintering cycle.
