The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is a species of social wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Vespidae. As the largest eusocial wasp native to Europe, it plays a complex role in the ecosystem. While it is a predator of various insects, it is frequently classified as an agricultural pest due to its destructive behavior toward trees and fruits during the late summer months.
This insect affects a variety of woody plants and fruit crops, including apple, pear, plum, and grapevines. Hornets strip the bark from young twigs and branches to access sap, which causes the shoot to wither or die. Furthermore, they are notorious for piercing the skin of ripening fruits, consuming the pulp, and causing severe damage to the harvest, often leading to secondary decay caused by fungi and bacteria.
The life cycle of the European hornet begins in early spring when the overwintered queen initiates a nest in a hollow tree, wall cavity, or birdhouse. The colony follows a pattern of complete metamorphosis through the stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. By late summer, the colony reaches its peak population of worker hornets, which requires significant amounts of sugar, leading to increased pressure on orchards and vineyards during the harvest season.
Damage caused by hornets is often characterized by ring-like girdling of young bark and deep, jagged holes in fleshy fruits. The pest's ability to defend its territory makes it a nuisance for orchardists. Beyond the direct loss of fruit, the damage weakens the overall vigor of the trees. The presence of hornets can also be hazardous to workers, as they may sting repeatedly when their nesting sites are disturbed or threatened.
