Vespa ducalis is a large hornet species belonging to the Vespidae family within the order Hymenoptera. Primarily found in East and Southeast Asia, this hornet is known for its impressive size and defensive nature. As an agricultural pest, it can pose significant challenges to commercial fruit production and home orchards.

The damage caused by Vespa ducalis is primarily focused on fruit-bearing trees. The hornets use their powerful mandibles to chew through the skin and flesh of ripening fruits, including grapes, pears, peaches, and apples. These open wounds serve as entry points for secondary diseases, such as fungal rots and bacterial infections, which quickly destroy the fruit quality.

The life cycle of this species is typical for social wasps. A queen emerges in the spring to establish a nest, followed by the development of workers that take over foraging and nest maintenance. The population peaks in late summer and early autumn. During this time, workers become highly aggressive in their search for sugar sources, coinciding with the harvest period of many fruit crops.

The harmfulness of this hornet lies in both direct crop destruction and its aggressive defense of colonies. Because they often nest in tree hollows or under the eaves of structures near agricultural land, their proximity to orchards makes them a persistent threat throughout the harvest season, causing substantial economic loss for growers.
