Oriental hornet

Vespa orientalis

Description

Systematic position: The Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Vespidae. It is a large, eusocial wasp species known for its resilience in warm, arid climates and its role as both a formidable predator and an agricultural pest.

Damaged crops: This pest primarily affects viticulture and fruit orchards, including figs, grapes, and pears. Hornets damage mature, sweet fruits by chewing through the skin to reach the pulp. This destruction not only causes direct yield loss but also leaves the fruit vulnerable to secondary fungal infections and fruit rot.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins in spring when the queen, after overwintering, establishes a nest in soil cavities, hollow trees, or man-made structures. The colony expands throughout the summer, peaking in late season. A unique biological feature of Vespa orientalis is the ability of its yellow abdominal bands to act as biological solar cells, capturing solar energy for metabolic processes.

Damage characteristics and economic impact: The damage is characterized by large, messy cavities in fruit, making the harvest unmarketable. Besides plants, the Oriental hornet is a notorious predator of honey bees. They raid beehives, decapitating bees and stealing brood and honey, which can cause severe economic disruption to apiary operations.

Control measures: Managing the Oriental hornet requires a multi-faceted strategy:

  • Setting up attractant-based traps to capture foragers around orchards and apiaries.
  • Locating and destroying nests by professional pest control operators, ideally at night.
  • Installing fine-mesh netting over high-value fruit clusters to block hornet access.
  • Using toxic baits targeted at the colony's social structure to reduce the population without harming non-target beneficial insects.
