Aerial yellowjacket

Systematic position. The aerial yellowjacket (Vespula atropilosa) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Vespidae family. It is a social wasp species native to parts of North America, recognized for its yellow-black coloration and its impact on local agricultural environments and fruit orchards.

Affected crops and damage. This wasp is known to infest various fruit-bearing plants, including apple, pear, plum, and grapevines. The adult wasps cause significant economic damage by piercing the skin of ripe fruits to consume the pulp. This behavior not only results in direct crop loss but also leaves the fruit vulnerable to secondary pathogens, such as fungal rots and bacteria.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Vespula atropilosa is typical for social vespids. An overwintered queen initiates a nest in early spring, often in soil voids or underground cavities. As the season progresses, the colony expands, and the demand for carbohydrates increases significantly, driving the workers to forage in nearby orchards during the late summer harvest season.

Economic importance. Beyond the physical damage to fruit, these wasps pose a management challenge due to their defensive nature. Their proximity to fruit clusters makes the manual harvesting process dangerous for workers, leading to potential labor disruptions. Furthermore, by causing fruit to ferment on the tree, they attract other pests, compounding the overall damage to the orchard.

Control measures. Effective management of aerial yellowjackets involves several key practices:

• Strategic placement of bait stations or traps early in the season.
• Meticulous sanitation, including the removal of all fallen or damaged fruit.
• Locating and removing ground nests if they are in close proximity to crop areas.
