The Transparent glass snail (Vitrina pellucida) is a land mollusc from the Vitrinidae family. It is characterized by its thin, fragile, and glossy shell that is too small for the animal to retract into completely. While often overlooked due to its small size, this snail can become a serious pest in horticultural settings, especially during mild and wet seasons.

This pest affects a wide variety of plant species. It primarily targets young seedlings of vegetables, salad greens, strawberries, and various ornamental flowers. By feeding on tender plant tissues, these snails can cause significant physiological stress to the plants, hindering their growth and reducing the overall harvest yield in small-scale garden plots.

The biology of Vitrina pellucida is heavily influenced by humidity and temperature. They are nocturnal creatures, hiding in damp soil or mulch during the day to avoid desiccation. Reproduction typically occurs throughout the growing season, and eggs are laid in clusters within moist, shaded crevices in the soil, ensuring rapid population expansion when conditions remain wet.

The damage caused by these snails is manifested as irregular holes in leaves, often leading to skeletonized foliage. Their presence is easily identified by the tell-tale shiny mucous trails left on the leaf surfaces. The main economic impact is due to the cosmetic damage to leafy crops and the potential for increased susceptibility to fungal diseases through the feeding wounds.

Effective control measures include a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Cleaning the garden of debris and excessive vegetation that serves as daytime shelter.
• Applying physical barriers such as crushed eggshells or copper tape around susceptible plant beds.
• Using certified molluscicides based on iron phosphate to minimize impact on beneficial wildlife.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ground beetles, toads, and songbirds in the garden area.
