Small Indian civet

The small Indian civet (Viverricula indica) is a member of the Viverridae family within the order Carnivora. Despite being a carnivore, its opportunistic diet makes it a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where it frequently raids plantations and farmlands for food sources.

This animal is known to cause damage to a variety of crops including coffee, maize, sugarcane, and various fruit trees. With a reproductive cycle that typically yields two litters per year, the species can maintain stable or growing populations, making it a persistent challenge for farmers who operate in areas overlapping with the animal's natural habitat.

Damage assessment indicates that the civet causes losses through selective feeding on high-value fruits and grains. Their presence is often identified by damaged fruit remains and well-worn trails across fields. Furthermore, their presence on farms can facilitate the spread of pathogens, potentially affecting the overall health and quality of the harvest.
