Systematic position: The genus Viviparus belongs to the Viviparidae family. While often viewed as beneficial in natural ecosystems, these freshwater snails can become problematic pests in managed aquatic environments such as hydroponic setups, aquaponics, and flooded crop fields like rice paddies.

Crops affected: The primary victims of these snails are young rice seedlings, submerged roots of ornamental plants, and various hydroponic leafy greens. They feed voraciously on the tender root tissues and young submerged shoots, which can severely stunt growth and compromise the plant's overall health.

Biology and life cycle: The distinctive feature of this genus is ovoviviparity, where the young are born fully developed rather than hatching from eggs. This reproductive strategy allows for rapid population growth under favorable conditions. They spend most of their time on the substrate, scavenging for detritus and decaying organic matter.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The direct damage involves grazing on roots and stem bases. Indirect damage is often more severe in controlled environments, as high densities of snails can clog irrigation piping, drainage outlets, and filtration systems, leading to system failure and labor-intensive maintenance issues.
