Bengal mystery snail

The Bengal mystery snail (Viviparus bengalensis) is a freshwater mollusk belonging to the Viviparidae family. While often appreciated in the aquarium trade, it is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in regions where rice and other semi-aquatic crops are cultivated, causing substantial damage to irrigated fields.

The primary crops affected by this snail include rice, particularly at the seedling stage. The snails feed on young, succulent shoots and roots, causing severe mechanical injury. This leads to reduced plant density, stunted growth, and significant yield losses, especially in areas with high infestation rates where the snails aggregate in large numbers.

The biological success of Viviparus bengalensis is largely due to its reproductive strategy, which is ovoviviparous. By giving birth to live, fully developed young, the species bypasses the highly vulnerable egg stage. This strategy ensures a higher survival rate for offspring even in challenging environmental conditions, allowing the population to expand rapidly.

The life cycle of the snail is intimately connected to its aquatic habitat. Irrigation channels and drainage ditches provide the ideal environment for these mollusks to thrive and migrate. As they move from larger water bodies into flooded crop fields, they establish themselves quickly, feeding on available vegetation and multiplying throughout the growing season.

Managing the Bengal mystery snail requires a multi-faceted approach. Agricultural practices, such as precise water level management and periodic drying of paddy fields, are the most effective non-chemical methods for disrupting their life cycle. Additionally, physical barriers in irrigation channels can help prevent the ingress of snails onto cultivated plots, supplemented by selective molluscicides if necessary.
