Red fox

Systematic position. The Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) belongs to the order Carnivora and the family Canidae. It is a highly adaptable predator that has successfully colonized various environments, frequently encroaching upon agricultural lands and livestock farming areas.

Affected species and assets. While not a pest of crops, the Red fox is a significant threat to agricultural holdings focused on small animal husbandry. The primary targets include domestic poultry (chickens, ducks, geese), rabbits, and sometimes young lambs, posing a continuous challenge for farmers aiming to secure their assets.

Biology and life cycle. Foxes are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal animals. Their breeding season typically occurs in late winter, with dens utilized for raising offspring. As the cubs grow, the parents increase their hunting activity, which often leads to intensified predation pressure on nearby farms during the late spring and summer months.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage caused by foxes is primarily economic through the direct loss of poultry and small livestock. A single raid on a poorly secured coop can result in the loss of the entire flock. Beyond direct killing, foxes are significant vectors of diseases, including rabies and sarcoptic mange, which represent severe health risks to other domestic animals.

Protection and control measures. Implementing effective farm security is essential to minimize the risk of fox predation:

• Construction of high-quality perimeter fencing, with mesh buried at least 30-50 cm deep to prevent digging.
• Use of automatic night-time locking systems for poultry houses.
• Deployment of motion-activated lighting or auditory deterrents to startle approaching predators.
• Proper sanitation to ensure feed and carcasses are not accessible to scavengers.
• Strategic use of livestock guardian dogs to deter intrusions.
