The genus Xanthandrus belongs to the hoverfly family (Syrphidae) within the order Diptera. While most syrphids are regarded as beneficial predators of aphids, the role of Xanthandrus in agriculture is nuanced. Some species are noted for their specific larval behavior, which occasionally impacts host plants, categorizing them as occasional pests in certain high-value horticultural environments.

These insects primarily target deciduous trees, ornamental shrubs, and certain vegetable crops. Adult flies are active pollinators that feed on nectar and pollen; however, the larval stage is where the interaction with the plant host becomes problematic.
