These small moths are recognized in agricultural and forestry contexts due to the feeding habits of their larvae, which are specialized consumers of specific plant tissues, often causing localized ecological and economic impact.

The primary host plants for species within this genus, most notably Xenolechia aethiops, are trees and shrubs from the family Salicaceae, particularly willows (Salix). These pests are often found in environments where these host plants grow densely, leading to localized outbreaks that can significantly affect the growth and aesthetic quality of the vegetation.

The biological cycle of Xenolechia follows the typical pattern of complete metamorphosis. It consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The timing of each phase is strictly governed by climatic conditions and the phenology of the host plant. The larvae are typically the most destructive stage, characterized by a period of intensive feeding during the spring and early summer months.

Damage caused by Xenolechia is characterized by the presence of leaf-rolling or mining activity. Larvae use silk to bind leaves together, creating a protective shelter or "nest" in which they feed on the mesophyll, leaving only the veins behind.
