Rat flea

The genus Xenopsylla belongs to the family Pulicidae (common fleas), part of the order Siphonaptera. While these insects are not phytophagous and do not directly damage plant tissues, they represent a significant threat to agricultural infrastructure where feed and plant products are stored. The most common species, Xenopsylla cheopis, is closely associated with synanthropic rodents found in farm buildings.

This object is not a traditional crop pest, as it does not feed on plant sap or organs. However, its presence in warehouses, grain storage facilities, and agricultural buildings is classified as a major sanitary risk. Fleas can be transported alongside sacks, grain, or bedding material, infesting storage facilities and equipment.

The life cycle of the Xenopsylla flea includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Unlike other flea species, larval development occurs directly in host nests or within accumulations of organic dust in storage areas rich in grain debris. The temperature and humidity conditions often found in granaries provide an ideal environment for rapid population growth.

The primary damage lies in the fact that Xenopsylla are obligate hematophages. They do not consume the harvest, but they create hazardous conditions for workers and act as vectors for dangerous infections, such as plague or typhus. Infestation of plant product facilities by fleas requires immediate sanitary intervention and deep cleaning before operations can continue.

Protection measures rely on strict adherence to sanitary standards and systematic rodent control. Key strategies include:

• Implementation of wet disinsection in storage facilities using specialized insecticides.
