Description
Xiphydria is a genus of wood-boring insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Xiphydriidae. These insects are classified as stem borers, and their specialized larval stages are known for causing significant structural damage to the internal tissues of various deciduous trees.
This pest primarily attacks a wide range of broad-leaved trees, including alder, birch, willow, poplar, and several species of fruit trees. They typically target trees that are already physiologically weakened, suffering from drought, or damaged by environmental factors.
The biology of Xiphydria revolves around its internal development. The female adult uses a specialized ovipositor to insert eggs deep into the wood or beneath the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae excavate tunnels throughout the wood, feeding on the inner layers for several months or even years before emerging as adults.
The damage caused by Xiphydria includes the destruction of xylem vessels, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients throughout the tree. This often leads to the dieback of branches, severe loss of wood quality, and in extreme cases, the total death of the tree specimen due to structural failure.
