Host plants. The primary hosts for Xiphydria longicollis include various deciduous species, particularly those in the genera Alnus (alder), Betula (birch), Salix (willow), and Acer (maple). They preferentially attack trees that are stressed, injured, or decaying, as these conditions favor larval development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult females deposit eggs into the wood using an ovipositor. The larvae then bore into the trunk, creating intricate tunnels. The pupation phase occurs within the wood, and adults emerge through circular exit holes, completing the cycle.

Damage patterns and economic impact. Larval tunneling severely degrades the quality of timber and structural integrity of the wood. These galleries also facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as wood-decay fungi, which further weaken the host tree. Extensive infestation can lead to dieback and, in severe cases, the death of the tree.

Control measures. Management focuses on silvicultural practices rather than chemical control. The most effective approach is the early identification and removal of infested or severely weakened trees to prevent the dispersal of adults. Maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and site management is essential to minimize the risk of attack.
