Xyletinus ater is a species belonging to the family Anobiidae, within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of stored products, known for its ability to infest various organic materials, including agricultural crops and processed plant matter in storage environments.

This pest mainly targets dry stored products, such as cereal grains, legumes, seeds, and dried fruits. In addition to food stocks, it can infest wood elements, often causing structural damage if populations go unchecked for extended periods within warehouses, silos, or domestic storage areas.

The life cycle of Xyletinus ater involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is responsible for most of the damage. Larvae bore into the substrate, creating intricate tunnels and galleries while feeding, which disrupts the structure of the infested material and introduces contaminants into the product.

The economic impact of this species is linked to direct mass loss and quality degradation of stored grain and other agricultural commodities. Signs of infestation include the presence of fine powder or dust (frass) emerging from small, round exit holes on the surface of the infested material or wooden structures.
