Wide-necked deathwatch beetle

Systematic position. Xyletinus laticollis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae (deathwatch beetles). This insect is recognized as a significant pest of stored products, commonly found in warehouses, mills, and silos where grain and dried plant-based materials are kept.

Affected crops. The beetle primarily infests various dry plant materials, including cereal grains, flour, processed grain products, dried fruits, and herbs. In addition to agricultural commodities, it can also infest wooden storage structures and containers, potentially spreading to adjacent stocks.

Biology and life cycle. The development cycle occurs entirely within the host material. The female deposits eggs in crevices or on the product surface. Larvae, which are the most destructive life stage, bore into the material, creating tunnels and feeding internally. Development speed is highly sensitive to environmental factors like temperature and moisture levels.

Nature of damage and economic importance. Larval feeding activity results in the destruction of the product structure, turning grain into dust and debris mixed with frass. The presence of these beetles leads to massive economic losses due to quality degradation, weight loss, and the contamination of stored goods, making them unsalable for human or animal consumption.

Control measures. Effective management requires rigorous preventive measures and intervention:

• Pre-storage cleaning and sanitization of warehouses.
• Maintaining optimal environmental conditions (low humidity and temperature).
• Fumigation of infested warehouses with approved insecticides.
• Regular monitoring and inspection of stored commodities to detect early signs of infestation.
