Xylion

Xylion is a genus of wood-boring beetles belonging to the family Bostrichidae (often referred to as auger beetles or powderpost beetles) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as significant technical pests of timber, capable of causing substantial economic damage to forest stands and processed wooden materials alike.

The pest primarily targets weakened trees, deadwood, and seasoned timber. Its host range includes a variety of hardwood and softwood species, including several fruit-bearing trees found in commercial orchards and private gardens. Due to their burrowing habits, they can easily infest structural timber, furniture, and harvested logs.

The biological cycle of Xylion comprises the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles bore into the wood to lay eggs, and the resulting larvae feed internally on the wood tissue. This feeding behavior creates complex galleries, which significantly degrade the structural integrity of the affected wood over time.

Damage symptoms include small, circular exit holes on the wood surface, accompanied by fine, flour-like frass. The impact is severe, as the beetles compromise the strength of timber and can lead to the physiological decline of live trees, making them susceptible to secondary infections by fungi and other pathogens.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Regular sanitation felling and removal of infested or dead trees.
• Maintaining proper moisture levels and ventilation in timber storage areas.
• Application of chemical insecticides or wood preservatives to infested areas.
