Xylobiops parilis

Xylobiops parilis is a species of beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles. These insects are notorious wood-borers that primarily target weakened, stressed, or recently damaged trees. Their ability to tunnel deep into the heartwood makes them significant pests in both forestry and horticulture.

These beetles affect a wide range of deciduous trees and woody plants, including various fruit-bearing species. In vineyards and nurseries, the presence of these beetles can lead to structural damage that ruins the value of the timber or the longevity of the plant. They are particularly drawn to wood with high moisture content and nutrient availability.

The life cycle involves the female boring into the bark and wood to lay eggs in tunnels. The larvae, which are the main destructive stage, tunnel through the xylem, feeding and creating complex networks of galleries filled with frass. Depending on the ambient temperature, the duration of the cycle varies, but the hidden nature of their development makes detection challenging.

Symptoms of infestation include small, perfectly circular entry holes on the bark and piles of fine wood dust (frass) accumulating at the base of the tree or in bark crevices. As the tunnels disrupt vascular tissues, the tree suffers from reduced vigor, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to other biotic stressors, ultimately leading to significant canopy loss.

Management of this pest relies on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include:

• Sanitation: Pruning and burning infested wood to reduce population density.
• Monitoring: Utilizing pheromone traps to identify the onset of adult flight.
• Chemical control: Applying systemic insecticides during peak activity periods to prevent oviposition.
• Silvicultural care: Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize attractivity.
