The Xylobiops texanus is a species of beetle belonging to the Bostrichidae family, commonly known as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles. This pest is a significant threat to various woody plants, as its larval stage causes internal damage by tunneling through tree tissues.

The pest primarily targets deciduous trees and shrubs. It is known to affect a wide range of hosts, including fruit trees like apples, pears, and especially grapevines. These beetles often attack trees that are already suffering from poor health, drought, or physical injury, accelerating the decline of the host plant.

The life cycle of Xylobiops texanus consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females bore into the bark to deposit eggs, and the resulting larvae feed on the sapwood. Their feeding activity creates intricate galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the tree, often leading to branch death.

Symptoms of infestation include tiny circular holes on the bark surface and the presence of fine sawdust or frass. As the larvae mature, the structural integrity of the wood is compromised, often leading to breakage during high winds. Severe infestations can result in the rapid death of entire trees if left untreated.
