Systematic position: Xylocis tortilicornis is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae (often referred to as death-watch beetles or wood borers). It is a specialized pest known for its role in colonizing stressed and decaying deciduous timber.

Host plants and damage: The insect primarily attacks deciduous trees, targeting those already weakened by drought, disease, or mechanical damage. It is frequently found in woodlots, mature gardens, and forest edges, where it thrives in dead or dying branches and trunks.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. Adults lay eggs on the bark surface, and larvae subsequently bore into the wood. The larval stage is the most destructive, as they spend their developmental period consuming and tunneling through the woody tissue. Once maturity is reached, the pupal stage occurs within the larval tunnels before the adults emerge through small exit holes.

Nature of damage and pest impact: The damage is characterized by intricate galleries created by the larvae, which are often filled with frass (wood dust). This internal tunneling significantly compromises the structural integrity of the wood and can facilitate the introduction of secondary fungal pathogens, leading to rot and accelerated tree decline.
