Xylodrepa (Lat. Xylodrepa) belongs to the family Silphidae, commonly known as carrion beetles, although this specific genus interacts with woody plants in ways that categorize it as a pest in various agricultural and forestry contexts. Taxonomically, it is classified within the order Coleoptera. These beetles possess a flattened body structure, which is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering beneath bark and within galleries created in the wood.

This pest primarily affects deciduous trees, including fruit orchards and various ornamental shrubs. They are particularly attracted to weakened or stressed trees that have pre-existing bark damage, which provides an easy entry point for the adults to lay eggs and for the larvae to begin their feeding process.

The biology of Xylodrepa is synchronized with the growth cycles of the host trees. During the warmer months, adults emerge and seek suitable hosts to deposit eggs into cracks or crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the phloem and cambium layers, significantly disrupting the tree's vascular system, which is vital for the transport of water and nutrients.

Damage caused by Xylodrepa is often evidenced by boreholes, frass (larval excrement), and localized patches of dead or peeling bark. The economic impact can be severe, as the feeding activity weakens the structural integrity of the tree and exposes the plant to secondary infections from fungi and bacteria, which can lead to the eventual decline and death of the plant.
