The spruce borer (Xyloperthella picea) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant technical pest, primarily affecting various coniferous timber products and weakened forest stands, leading to substantial degradation of wood quality.
The primary hosts for Xyloperthella picea include spruce and pine species. The beetle is particularly attracted to dying or freshly felled trees, as well as stored lumber that has not been properly treated or stored in conditions that favor the rapid development of wood-destroying insects.
Regarding its biology, the female beetle deposits eggs into bark crevices or directly onto the wood surface. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the timber, creating extensive galleries filled with frass. This hidden life stage, lasting until pupation and adult emergence, makes it difficult to detect the infestation until physical signs of damage become visible.
The damage caused by these insects is severe. As larvae tunnel through the wood, they destroy its structural integrity, effectively reducing timber value to zero in many cases. The visible surface entry holes are often accompanied by fine, powdery bore dust, which is a clear diagnostic indicator of an active infestation.
