Description
Systematic position. Xyloperthodes belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae (auger beetles). These insects are specialized wood-borers that pose a significant threat to various woody plants in both forestry and agricultural sectors.
Affected crops. The pest targets a variety of broad-leaved trees, including fruit-bearing orchards. It particularly thrives on stressed trees and stored wood materials, where the larvae penetrate deep into the tissue, compromising the structural integrity and quality of the wood.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into bark crevices or specifically bored entrance holes. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, feeding on internal tissues and creating a network of galleries typically packed with wood dust (frass).
Damage and pest significance. The primary damage is caused by the larvae as they disrupt the conductive tissues of the tree, hindering nutrient flow. Adults also bore into twigs and smaller branches, often causing dieback. Sustained infestations lead to general tree decline, loss of fruit yield, and, in severe cases, the death of the host tree.
Protection measures. Effective control relies on cultural and sanitary practices. Key strategies include:
- Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood or dead branches.
- Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and nutrition.
- Application of insecticides during the adult emergence phase.
- Use of pheromone traps for monitoring and early detection.
