Xylopsocus

Systematic position. Xylopsocus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles. These insects are well-adapted to boring into woody tissues, making them significant pests in both forestry and horticulture.

Affected crops. This pest primarily attacks various species of fruit trees and woody ornamental plants. It is particularly known for infesting branches and trunks, often targeting trees that are stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous mechanical injuries.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves the female depositing eggs into bark crevices or existing wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, feeding on the inner bark and sapwood. They develop entirely within the woody tissue, eventually pupating inside the tunnels before emerging as adults to mate and start a new generation.

Damage patterns and harmfulness. The damage is characterized by circular exit holes and the presence of fine sawdust (frass) on the bark surface. Internal tunnels disrupt the vascular system, which leads to branch dieback, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by fungi or bacteria. In severe infestations, the entire tree may decline rapidly.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Xylopsocus. Recommended strategies include:

• Regular pruning and removal of infested wood to lower population density.
• Maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and nutrition to increase natural defenses.
• Applying contact or systemic insecticides during the peak flight season of adult beetles.
• Using pheromone or light traps to monitor population levels for timely intervention.
