Capuchin beetle

The Capuchin beetle (Xylopsocus capucinus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant technical pest, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Due to global trade, it has the potential to spread through infested timber and wooden packaging materials into new environments.

This species has a broad host range, affecting various broadleaved tree species. Common hosts include rubber trees, coffee plants, tea bushes, and numerous fruit and ornamental trees. The beetle is particularly notorious for its ability to infest seasoned wood, making it a critical threat to the lumber industry, furniture manufacturers, and wooden infrastructure.

The life cycle of the beetle is entirely hidden within its host material. Adult females bore into the bark or wood surface to lay eggs. Upon hatching, larvae burrow deep into the interior of the wood, creating a complex network of tunnels. Because the entire development occurs inside the wood, infestations often remain undetected until significant structural damage has already occurred.

The economic impact of Xylopsocus capucinus is driven by the degradation of wood quality. Characteristic symptoms of infestation include the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface and the accumulation of fine, powdery wood dust, commonly known as frass. Heavy infestation can compromise the structural integrity of wooden beams and cause the rapid decline of living trees.

Management and control strategies focus on sanitation and preventive measures:

• Strict adherence to ISPM 15 standards for heat treatment of wooden pallets and crates.
• Regular inspection of warehouses and timber yards to detect early signs of frass.
• Removal and proper disposal of infested or dying trees to reduce local population pressure.
• Application of protective chemical coatings and residual insecticides to vulnerable wood surfaces.
