Description
Xylopsocus castanopterus is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles. This pest is recognized for its ability to bore deep into the wood of various deciduous trees and timber products, causing significant structural damage.
The beetle targets a wide range of host plants, including fruit trees and several industrial timber species. While it often colonizes stressed or recently felled trees, it is also highly capable of infesting healthy specimens, making it a threat to both natural forests and managed plantations.
The biological cycle involves a complete metamorphosis. The female beetle bores into the wood to lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae spend their entire developmental phase inside the wood, feeding on internal fibers and excavating complex galleries that weaken the structural integrity of the host.
