Xylothrips

Xylothrips is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Bostrichidae, commonly referred to as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests that play a significant role in the degradation of woody tissues in both standing forests and stored timber products.

This pest primarily attacks various tree species, favoring weakened or dying specimens, as well as harvested logs and lumber. Its ability to infest dried wood makes it a particular threat to wood-based industries, furniture production, and structural timber in buildings.

The biology of Xylothrips involves a typical holometabolous life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females bore into the wood to lay eggs, and the emerging larvae feed extensively within the xylem, creating intricate galleries. This internal feeding process is what leads to the structural decay of the infested host material.

The damage is characterized by circular exit holes and the presence of fine, flour-like frass on the surface of the wood. The economic impact is substantial, as infested wood loses its structural integrity and aesthetic value, often rendering it unusable for construction or manufacturing purposes.
