Description

The alfalfa moth (Xystophora pulveratella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is recognized as a specific pest of forage legumes, particularly alfalfa, which it infests during various stages of the plant's development, posing a significant risk to high-yield harvests.

The primary host for this pest is Medicago sativa (alfalfa). The moth prefers fields that are managed for intensive production, where the dense canopy creates an optimal microclimate for the larvae to feed, grow, and complete their developmental cycles without major environmental disruption.

The biological cycle of the moth typically involves overwintering as pupae in the upper soil layers or within crop residues. As temperatures rise in spring, adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the host plants. The larvae, once hatched, begin immediate feeding on the tender foliage of the alfalfa shoots.

Symptoms of damage are quite distinctive: the larvae web together the terminal leaves using silk, creating small shelters. Within these webs, they feed on leaf tissue, resulting in skeletonized leaves that eventually curl, dry out, and turn brown, significantly reducing the photosynthetic capacity and nutritional quality of the forage.
