Description
The ermine moth (genus Yponomeuta) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Yponomeutidae. These moths are well-known for their unique larval behavior, as they live in large, communal silk webs that can cover entire branches of host trees, leading to severe defoliation.
These pests primarily target fruit trees and ornamental shrubs such as apple, cherry, plum, hawthorn, and spindle trees. While different species show preference for specific hosts, the overall impact remains consistent: significant loss of leaf mass that weakens the tree's health and reduces fruit yields.
The life cycle typically includes one generation per year. Caterpillars hibernate during the winter under protective shields on the tree bark. In spring, they emerge as buds break, initially mining the leaves before constructing the signature communal webs where they feed gregariously until pupation.
Damage is highly visible during the peak feeding season. As the larvae grow, they consume all available leaf tissue within their webbed enclosures, often leaving the tree looking as if it has been scorched. Prolonged or severe infestations over several years can result in tree mortality or stunted growth.
