Bird-cherry ermine moth

The Bird-cherry ermine moth (Yponomeuta evonymella) is a species of moth belonging to the family Yponomeutidae. It is a notorious defoliator, known primarily for its larvae's ability to create massive silken webs that can cover entire trees, leading to severe foliage loss and physiological stress to the host.

The primary host plant for this pest is the bird cherry (Prunus padus), though it can occasionally attack other related species. The larvae are gregarious, meaning they live and feed in large groups, which facilitates the construction of the elaborate silk nests that serve as both a food storage area and a protective shelter against predators.

The life cycle involves one generation per year. The insect overwinters as first-instar larvae protected by a silken shield on the bark. In spring, coincident with the budding of the host plant, the larvae emerge to mine the leaves. As they grow, they move to the surface of the foliage, spinning expansive webs that encase the branches and leaves, where they undergo pupation in late spring or summer.

The damage caused by Yponomeuta evonymella is distinct due to the extensive skeletonization of leaves, leaving only veins intact. Severe infestations lead to complete defoliation, which forces the tree to produce a second set of leaves, depleting its energy reserves. This cycle, if repeated annually, can significantly weaken the trees, making them susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Mechanical removal of webbed clusters early in the season is highly effective in small settings. In larger infestations, chemical control using systemic insecticides applied just after egg hatch is the standard approach. Biological control, including the use of Bacillus thuringiensis, offers an environmentally friendly alternative that targets the larvae while preserving beneficial insect populations.
