Description
The spindle ermine moth (Yponomeuta irrorella) is a member of the Yponomeutidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest primarily affecting shrubs belonging to the Euonymus genus, which are commonly used in landscaping.
The host range is relatively narrow, focusing almost exclusively on spindle trees and shrubs. Due to the colonial behavior of the larvae, individual plants can suffer severe defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to store nutrients and reduces its overall vigor throughout the growing season.
The life cycle involves one generation per year. The insect overwinters as young larvae beneath protective silken shields on the bark of host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge, bore into expanding buds, and subsequently begin spinning extensive silken webs to protect themselves while feeding on leaves.
Damage is characterized by the consumption of leaf tissue, often leaving only the veins or causing complete foliage loss. These large silken tents are highly visible and indicative of an infestation. The resulting aesthetic damage is severe, and the loss of foliage can weaken the plant, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens.
Effective management requires vigilance during the early spring period. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is most effective when applied shortly after larvae emerge from their overwintering sites. In smaller gardens, physical pruning and destruction of the silk nests remain a highly recommended and environmentally friendly method for controlling localized populations.
