Meguroni ermine moth

The Meguroni ermine moth (Yponomeuta meguronis) is a lepidopteran insect belonging to the Yponomeutidae family. Recognized as a significant pest, this moth is characterized by its specific host range and distinct larval behavior that leads to severe plant defoliation when populations reach high densities.

This species primarily targets plants within the Rosaceae family and the genus Euonymus. Its impact is most visible in nurseries, ornamental gardens, and orchards, where the activity of the larvae can jeopardize the health and structural integrity of the affected host trees and shrubs throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of the moth consists of a single generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the first instar stage, hidden beneath a protective shield on the bark. In spring, they emerge concurrently with the budding of the host plant. They initially burrow into the buds before emerging to spin collective web nests on the foliage, which serve as their primary feeding sites.

The damage caused by the Meguroni ermine moth is both physical and physiological. As the larvae feed in colonies, they skeletonize leaves, leaving behind only the veins. Extensive webbing covers entire branches, and severe infestations often lead to complete defoliation, which causes significant stress to the plant, reduces photosynthetic capacity, and stunts annual growth.
