Description
The orchard ermine moth (Yponomeuta padella) is a destructive pest belonging to the Yponomeutidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is widely recognized in orchards for its capability to cause significant foliage damage and weaken tree health during the spring and early summer periods.
This moth primarily targets fruit trees and shrubs, including apple, plum, cherry, hawthorn, and blackthorn. A severe infestation can lead to total defoliation of the canopy, which causes severe stress to the host plant, resulting in reduced fruit production and compromised winter hardiness of the orchard trees.
The species completes one generation annually. Larvae overwinter in the first instar stage beneath protective shields made of dried egg secretion on the bark of thin twigs. Upon bud burst in the spring, the larvae emerge, initially mining into the developing buds before moving onto the foliage to feed openly.
The primary symptom of an infestation is the creation of dense, silken web nests that enclose leaves and branches. Inside these webs, colonies of caterpillars feed collectively, leaving behind only the veins of the leaves. This extensive webbing gives infested trees a ghostly, skeletonized appearance during peak outbreaks.
Integrated pest management is essential for control. This includes timing insecticide treatments to coincide with the emergence of larvae from their overwintering sites, manually pruning and destroying infested web clusters, and utilizing pheromone traps to monitor adult moth populations to time spray applications accurately.
