Description
Zelleria is a genus of moths belonging to the family Yponomeutidae (ermine moths). These small insects are often overlooked due to their cryptic behavior and size, yet their larval stage can cause significant damage to specific plant hosts in orchards and ornamental settings.
The primary hosts for these pests include various shrubs and trees. The most notable species, Zelleria oleastrella, is a well-known pest of olive trees (Olea europaea). Other species within the genus are known to infest conifers and certain broad-leaved ornamental shrubs, affecting both growth and aesthetic value.
The life cycle of Zelleria follows the typical pattern of Lepidoptera, consisting of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Adults are typically nocturnal or crepuscular. Females deposit their eggs directly onto the foliage or terminal buds of the host plant, ensuring that larvae have immediate access to nutrients upon hatching.
The damage caused by these moths primarily involves leaf mining, feeding on buds, and destroying tender apical shoots. Larvae often spin silk webbing around the leaves to create protective nests or tubes. This leads to leaf distortion, reduced photosynthesis, and, in cases of high infestation, significant defoliation and stunted plant growth.
