Zelus cervicalis

Zelus cervicalis is a species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Reduviidae, commonly known as assassin bugs. While many assassin bugs are beneficial predators that control pest populations, this specific species can become a nuisance in agricultural settings, causing mechanical and physiological damage to various host plants.

This pest is primarily found on vegetable crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as on various ornamental plants. It thrives in humid environments with dense foliage, which provides both shelter and a strategic hunting ground for these insects during their active developmental phases.

The life cycle of Zelus cervicalis consists of egg, nymphal stages, and adult phases. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the underside of leaves. Nymphs look like miniature versions of the adults and start feeding shortly after hatching. Their reproduction rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature and available food resources.

Damage is caused by the insect’s piercing-sucking mouthparts. By inserting its rostrum into the plant tissue, it extracts fluids and can inject enzymes that cause necrosis and wilting.
